Sports Grant Premium

At St Joseph's Catholic Primary School, we recognise the contribution of PE to the health and well-being of the children. We believe that an innovative, varied PE curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities have a positive influence on the concentration, attitude and academic achievement of all our children.

What is the Sports Premium?

The government  is spending over £450 million on this funding over the 3 academic years 2013 to 2014, 2014 to 2015 and 2015 to 2016. The funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, and will see money going directly to primary school headteachers to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children. This year each school will receive £8,000 plus an additional payment of £5 per pupil which will mean that we will receive £8440.00 for 2016/17. The money can only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools.

Purpose of the funding

Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and sport they offer but  have the freedom to choose how they do this.

Possible uses of the funding include:

  • Hiring qualified sports coaches to work alongside primary teachers when teaching PE
  • Provide existing staff with training or resources to help them teach PE and sport more effectively
  • Introduce new sports or activities and encourage more pupils to take up sport
  • Support and involve the least active children by running or extending school sports clubs, holiday clubs and Change4Life sport clubs
  • Run sport competitions or run sports activities with other schools
  • Increase pupils' participation in the School Games
