Miss Ollerton
Week Commencing: 22.04.25
Wow! What an amazing first week at St Joseph’s. It has been so lovely to get to know the children in Cl R/1 and their parents, thank you for making me feel so welcome. We have had such a busy week in and out of class. Both year groups have thoroughly enjoyed learning outdoors with Stanley Grange. Reception have been super sporty this week on the balance bikes, learning how to be safe and ride their bike. We have started our new units in science, history and art! Looking at space, animals including humans and making print using our hands. The children have worked so hard this week, especially with the change of teacher and the first week back! I am looking forward to the rest of my time in Class R/1, we have so many exciting things planned. Miss McEvoy

Yet again, we've had another busy week in Class R/1! In RE, the children enjoyed creating some Palm Sunday inspired artwork using coloured card and oil pastels. In geography, the children identified which animals live in hot and cold places and worked hard to explain why each animal was suited to each habitat. The children are working equally as hard in English to plan and write a non-chronological report on Arctic and desert animals. To end the week, the children were thrilled to have lunch with their family members on Friday. We look forward to starting our 'Freestanding Structures' unit next week as we begin DT week which is always popular amongst the class.

Wow! What a fantastic, busy week we've had in Class R/1! It has been assessment week this week and the children have been working incredibly hard to showcase their skills and knowledge. In English, the children have been busy creating their own polar themed characters which they have enjoyed writing about within their own animal themed adventure story. Phonics wise, Reception have been learning the 'air' trigraph, while Year One have been revising the 've, ai, at and oi' sounds. Well done to Year One who have been keen to earn lots of honey pots on EdShed this week as they have been playing lots of different games in preparation for their weekly spelling test. A highlight of the week for many of the children was learning all about Neil Armstrong and Tim Peake in science. I think we may have some future astronauts in Class R/1!
Week Commencing: 10.03.25
In Phonics this week, Reception have been learning the 'igh' trigraph while Year One have been revising 'nk' and 'tch'. Maths wise, Reception have been busy exploring 9 and 10, while Year One have moved on to comparing length and height. As part of our Desert to Garden themed RE unit, we explored Jesus' temptation in the desert. We talked about how Jesus may have felt and the children worked hard to infer what Jesus may have been thinking during his time in the desert. The children were encouraged to think about a time in which they may have felt tempted to make a bad choice. In science this week, we explored the role of an astronaut. The children found out about the type of training that an astronaut needs to do before they can go to space, as well as learning about how astronauts gather information about space. To end the week, we learnt about why some places are hot and why some are cold. Our deserts and poles themed geography unit is very popular with the class! The children are enjoying sharing their knowledge of animals that live in hot and cold places too which is great to see. Well done, Class R/1! On Friday, pupils looked at the difference between taller and shorter by drawing round each other to compare heights.
