Prayer and Liturgy

Prayer and Liturgy at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School

Prayer and liturgy are at the heart of life at St Joseph’s. They shape our identity as a Catholic school, deepen our relationship with God, and help our children grow spiritually, emotionally and morally. Through daily prayer, seasonal worship and shared moments of reflection, we nurture a community rooted in faith, love and hope.

Living the Liturgical Year

Our prayer life follows the rhythm of the Church’s seasons. Each term carries its own atmosphere, tone and focus, helping children appreciate the beauty and meaning of the liturgical year. Across Advent, Lent, Eastertide, Pentecost and Ordinary Time, classrooms and shared spaces change to reflect the season through colour, symbols, Scripture and prayer. This helps pupils recognise that faith is something lived, celebrated and experienced throughout the whole year.

Daily and Weekly Rhythm of Prayer

Prayer is woven into the fabric of each school day. Children learn traditional Catholic prayers, experience moments of stillness, and take part in class‑based and pupil‑led worship. Our weekly rhythm includes:

  • Monday Celebration of the Word with the Headteacher

  • Wednesday Ruah Singing Praise

  • Friday Celebration Assembly

  • Throughout the week: class worship, meditation and opportunities for pupil leadership in prayer

This consistent pattern helps children grow in confidence, reverence and familiarity with the language and rhythm of Catholic worship.

An Inclusive and Welcoming Community

St Joseph’s is deeply committed to ensuring that every child—regardless of background, need or faith tradition—can participate fully in prayer and liturgy. As our Annual Plan states, we “create an environment where all children… are fully included in the life of the school and can participate meaningfully in prayer, liturgy, learning, and wider opportunities.”

Children of other faiths are always welcomed with sensitivity and respect. In line with the Prayer and Liturgy Directory, we ensure that participation is always appropriate and honours each child’s own tradition, while maintaining the distinctiveness of Catholic worship.

Pupil Leadership and Spiritual Growth

Pupils play an active and valued role in shaping the prayer life of our school. Groups such as the Mini Vinnies, Prayer Leaders, Planet Protectors and School Council contribute to worship, charitable action and community outreach. Older pupils support younger ones, read Scripture (where appropriate), and help plan and lead acts of worship.

These experiences help children grow in confidence, compassion and discipleship, encouraging them to live out the Gospel values in their daily lives.
