Monster Phonics
At St Joseph’s, we use the Monster Phonics scheme to give every child a strong, confident start on their reading journey. This systematic, engaging programme helps children learn new sounds through colour‑coding, characters and memorable stories that make phonics fun and accessible.
Reading books sent home each week are carefully matched to the sounds children have been learning in class, ensuring they can practise and apply their new skills straight away. For pupils who need a little extra support, we provide additional ‘keep‑up’ and ‘catch‑up’ books so they can revisit previously taught sounds and build fluency at their own pace.
Alongside their phonics book, every child also chooses a school library book to enjoy and share at home, helping to foster a lifelong love of reading.
