Class Kolbe have had a lovely—though incredibly busy—first week back after the holidays! We have thrown ourselves straight into our new art unit, where the children have been studying Hoghton Tower and exploring how mood and lighting can dramatically change the atmosphere of their artwork. In Maths, Year 5 have been working hard on multiplying fractions, while Year 6 have been developing their understanding of decimals. The highlight of the week for Year 6 was without doubt their exciting trip to London to visit the Houses of Parliament. The children even had the chance to meet Mr Speaker himself and enjoyed a fascinating tour around several parliamentary buildings. It has certainly been a memorable start to the term!

What a wonderful way to close our Spring One term in Class Kolbe! The children have ended the week— and the term—on a real high, showing great effort and enthusiasm across all areas of learning. In history, we concluded our Anglo-Saxons unit by exploring the connections between the Anglo-Saxons and the Scots. The children demonstrated excellent curiosity and engagement as they traced historical links and discussed their significance. In science, we focused on healthy lifestyles and diet as part of our circulatory system unit. The children enjoyed learning how what we eat and how we live impacts our bodies and overall wellbeing. Our mathematicians have been shining this week! Year 5 have been making fantastic progress with division, while Year 6 have been phenomenal with algebra—a real highlight of the week. In English, the children produced independent writing pieces comparing Beowulf to a monster of their own choosing. Their creativity and narrative skills were truly impressive. In Religious Education, we explored the Seven Sacraments and their meaning to Catholics. The children reflected thoughtfully on how these rituals shape Catholic life and practice. It has been a pleasure to see the children finish the term with such positivity, curiosity, and achievement. We look forward to more exciting learning in the next term (and hopefully some nicer weather).

We’ve had a wonderfully full and exciting week in Class Kolbe, with the children showing fantastic effort and enthusiasm across all areas of learning. This week, our English focus was a shared write based on retelling the legendary battle Beowulf vs. Grendel. The children truly impressed me with their powerful descriptive language, vivid imagery and careful attention to sentence structure. Their ability to build suspense and bring scenes to life has been
outstanding. Maths wise, Year 5 have been working on long multiplication, developing confidence in using written methods and checking their answers with accuracy, whilst Year 6 have been exploring algebra, particularly function
machines. Both year groups have worked brilliantly and shown great determination. In RE, we have been reflecting on the passage from John’s Gospel: “I am the Bread of Life.” The children showed deep understanding and
were able to discuss the meaning of Jesus’ words with sensitivity and insight. In addition to this, on Tuesday morning, we were delighted to be joined by Mrs Bridge as we held our class Celebration of the Word. Our prayer leaders
carefully and thoughtfully wrote their own bidding prayers, helping to guide the class in a reflective and meaningful worship. In History, we took a closer look at Alfred the Great, exploring why he was given the title “the Great.” The children enjoyed learning about his achievements and considering what makes a leader truly worthy of such recognition. From legendary battles to algebra, gospel reflections to great kings, Class Kolbe have embraced every challenge with enthusiasm. I am are incredibly proud of them all.

This week in Class Kolbe, the children have been busy across the curriculum. In RE, we have continued exploring Jesus’ miracles: comparing the key messages and symbols found in different stories. In Maths, Year 5 have finally completed their work on fractions and have moved on to multiplication, while Year 6 have been focusing on scale and proportion. In English, we have been learning about different sentence structures—simple, compound and complex—and will be applying this knowledge in our shared write next week. In science, the children investigated how nutrients travel around the body and were particularly interested to learn that fish are the only vertebrates to have a single closed circulatory system. Finally, in worship, we reflected on this week’s Gospel, where Jesus asked his disciples to leave their own lives behind and follow him; a difficult decision, yet one they were all called to make. This led us to think about how God calls each of us in our own lives.
